Identity

1. Think about how an individual's identity is shaped. What factors have led to the formation of your own identity?

I thought of what I was proud of. I felt that I was proud of being in Hwa Chong Instituition and being a Singaporean. I am also a person who would also never hesitate to fight for justice and peace.

2. Search for three images (that are not a photograph of you) that you feel represent your identity, and post them into this entry.

ONLINE LESSON #2

*Re-read Ray Bradbury's story "All Summer in a Day." In your blog, identify who should be held responsible for Margot's treatment, and why.

I feel that the teacher and the bully should be held responsible for Margot's treatment. Firstly, I strongly feel that teacher should have stepped in to stop the bully. I am sure the teacher has seen how Margot was treated and she should not have just let the matter go. Now that the teacher failed to take action, Margot has just missed the precious hour of sunlight and has to wait for another seven years before the sun apperars again. The bully is also at fault. He keeps putting her down that the sun would not appear at all. He should not have locked Margot in the closet. He still refuses to open the door when the girls plead with him. Only when the sun had risen and set, did he remember about Matgot and feel guilty of what he did to Margot.

Then imagine yourself as one of the schoolchildren; what might you have chosen to do which would have led to a positive outcome? (#LA-ACE)

If I were one of the boys, I would stood up against the bully and fight for Margot's rights. This is because I feel that there is no difference between a person who is born on Earth and born on Venus. After reading the story, I saw how damaging prejudice can be to a person. Thus, I told myself that I would never make the same mistake. Instead, I felt that if I was the bully's friend, I should stand up for the right thing and make no comprimises in fighting for Margot's release. This would be a good way of settling the problem as the bully can realise his mistake earlier and he would not have to feel guilty later, moreover, Margot would also get to see the sun.

However, if I were one of the girls, I know that it would be pointless trying to argue with the boys as they would simply ignore me. Thus, I would think of alternatives such as looking for help from the teacher. I am sure that the teacher would be able to settle this matter peacefully and everyone would get to see the sun and no tears would be shed.

My Favourite Memory of Chinese New Year

I always look forward to Chinese New Year. I never fail to collect a huge amount of red packets. Everytime i receive one, I would feel them carefully with my fingers and try to see how much there is inside. During Chineese New Year, there would be a wide variety of food and goodies. Whenever the aroma of the New Year delicacies fill my nose, I would get so hungry. Once in a while, I would pop a chocolate or candy from the coffee table into my mouth. During the chinese New Year visitations, there would be performances suc as lion dance in the ground floor. The raw sounds of the festive new ear would fill our house, contributing to the mood and atmosphere.

Collaboration with other people

One of my main experiences with collaborating with others was during Projects day last year. It was the first time I collaborated with my classmates to do a project that lasts for months. During that period, I learnt the importance of teamwork. Teamwork was required to complete most of the tasks. We had to be responsible and committed in order to do well. These were important lessons I learnt. Even though we did not do well last year, th experience was new, enriching and valuable. I hope to improve on my teamwork skills this year and learn from the mistakes we made last year.

Reflections on my comic strip online lesson

I felt that makig use of online tools to make comic strips was a very interesting way of having online lessons. I felt that this method was very fun and enriching. It is a new experience for me and I hope to have more online lessons that are similar to this. I feel that i have learnt many things during the online lesson. It helps us to think about what kind of characters we want and what kind of characteristics they have that make them stand out. Given the limited space that we have in the comic strip, we had to make sure there are not too many words and manage to convey the message within a limited number of words. I felt that these things that we learnt through the comic strip can be applied in our essays and thus, they are valuable skills that would stay with us for years.

My catoon- LA Online Lesson

I created my own catoon! The theme is prejudice. Enjoy!

Alien politics

Alien politics
Questions:
1. Why did you choose these particular different pictures or background(s)?
I found the images of aliens which were available at the website very cute. There was also a space themed background to supplement it. This perfect combination made it look very nice. I was also able to change the facial expression of each individual alien to go with the different situation.

2. How do these images contribute to your narrative elements (plot, setting, characterization, etc.)?
The images help to make the comic strip more lively and and also to add humour. I felt that the aliens make better characters than humans. The aliens' looks help to bring out their feelings against each other. The theme of prejudice against looks is also shown clearly.

3. How did you make use of the different narrative elements to contribute to the theme you have chosen?
I made use of dialogues. The conversations help to contribute about how they feel about each other in terms of looks. In this way, we are looking at the prejudice theme in the point of view of an alien.

Learning Goals in LA

This year, I would want to learn more about literature. I would like to improve on my poem analysis. I hope to be able to master these two topics by the end of this year. I would also like to learn about how to appreciate books such as “To Kill a Mockingbird” and how the author makes use of words to convey the mockingbird theme, prejudice etc. I also aim to read more in order to have a greater exposure to different kinds of writing styles. Moreover, I would like to do more to help myself in my comprehension as I am quite weak at that. In conclusion, I hope to see an overall improvement in my LA grades and learn from my mistakes last year and improve on my weaknesses.

LA-ACE

Have you ever been part of a group of people who were unkind to one or some individuals? What was the circumstance? How did you act? What did you feel?

Yes, I have. When I was in primary school, we were assigned to do a Science project. In our group, there were five people. There were about two people who were not very cooperative. Instead of contributing to the group, they began bullying another member for being a nerd and made many unkind remarks to him. He was one of my good friends and I felt sorry for him and tried to step in to help. I told the "bullies" to leave him alone. However, my words fell on deaf ears and my friend was treated unkindly whenever we met to discuss on our project. Moreover, I was told that I could join my friend and be another nerd. I really wanted to help my friend; however, I was afraid to lose the "bullies" as friends. Ever since that incident, I felt really guilty for not standing up for the right thing. I learnt that if i ever get into situations like this, being a coward should be the last option. I have also learnt to choose my friends carefully, instead of mixing around with bullies. I learnt that these people were not true friends who will stand up for you and stick with you through thick and thin.

Favourite Song

My favourite song is Love Me by Collin Raye. I felt that the Lyrics were really touching. It was about a relationship between a couple that lasted for so many years. It is really the power of true everlasting love. The song is embedded at the bottom of this post.
LYRICS
I read a note my grandma wrote back in nineteen twenty-three.
Grandpa kept it in his coat, and he showed it once to me. He said,
"Boy, you might not understand, but a long, long time ago,
Grandma's daddy didn't like me none, but I loved your Grandma so."

We had this crazy plan to meet and run away together.
Get married in the first town we came to, and live forever.
But nailed to the tree where we were supposed to meet, instead
Of her, I found this letter, and this is what it said:

If you get there before I do, don't give up on me.
I'll meet you when my chores are through;
I don't know how long I'll be.
But I'm not gonna let you down, darling wait and see.
And between now and then, till I see you again,
I'll be loving you. Love, me.

I read those words just hours before my Grandma passed away,
In the doorway of a church where me and Grandpa stopped to pray.
I know I'd never seen him cry in all my fifteen years;
But as he said these words to her, his eyes filled up with tears.
If you get there before I do, don't give up on me.
I'll meet you when my chores are through;
I don't know how long I'll be.
But I'm not gonna let you down, darling wait and see.
And between now and then, till I see you again,
I'll be loving you. Love, me.
Between now and then, till I see you again,
I'll be loving you. Love, me

Things that I Found Valuable in My LA Lessons Last year

Throughout my lessons last year, I have gained exposure to many different types of writing styles, such as poetry, how to write a literature answer, etc. Though I am still not very good in some areas, I have seen some improvement and I learnt how to appreciate the writing styles of different writers or poets. I felt that learning about how to analyse a writer's style of writing in literature was the most valuable thing I have learnt. I have learnt that writers choose every word carefully to suit the situation and theme of the story. I found my Language Arts teacher's (Mr Lundberg) teaching styles interesting and new, such as the "pass the ball" system to encourage people to speak up. More people have become enthusiastic about speaking up during lessons. The only problem I have is that because of the wide exposure to different things, I am unable to focus on anything so even when I have not fully understood something, we might have already moved to the the next topic. ACE assignments such as blog posts increase the opportunities for all of us to express ourselves and commenting on other's blogs allows us to get to read and know about how other's are writing. Therefore, we are given the opportunity to learn from one another.

My Favourite Book

Kite Runner
My favourite book is The Kite Runner. It was recommended to me by my mother. When I began reading, I became so immersed in it that I could not even put it down. The setting was pictured very clearly and everything seemed so real. Even though it’s a fiction novel, everything seemed so real. It is a touching story of friendship, family relationships and betrayal. These main themes are all blended together, making up this lovely book. These themes are scenes that do happen in real life. The book also shows how war and terrorism has scarred Afghanistan and caused the death of innocent civilians. This is a book that I would not hesitate to recommend to others.

Shel Silverstein poems

The Little Boy and the Old Man by Shel Silverstein

Said the little boy, "Sometimes I drop my spoon."
Said the old man, "I do that too."
The little boy whispered, "I wet my pants."
"I do that too," laughed the little old man.
Said the little boy, "I often cry."
The old man nodded, "So do I."
"But worst of all," said the boy, "it seems
Grown-ups don't pay attention to me."
And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand.
"I know what you mean," said the little old man.

1)What is the underlying message that is being conveyed in this poem?
The underlying message is that both old people and children have many interesting similarities, especially not receiving attentions, being neglected and forgotten by adults.

2)Has Shel Silverstain used any particular poetic technique that brings out this message more clearly?
Shel Silverstain used a conversation to bring out the irony that both people with such a huge age gap have so many similarities.

Messy Room by Shel Silverstein

Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
His underwear is hanging on the lamp.
His raincoat is there in the overstuffed chair,
And the chair is becoming quite mucky and damp.
His workbook is wedged in the window,
His sweater's been thrown on the floor.
His scarf and one ski are beneath the TV,
And his pants have been carelessly hung on the door.
His books are all jammed in the closet,
His vest has been left in the hall.
A lizard named Ed is asleep in his bed,
And his smelly old sock has been stuck to the wall.
Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
Donald or Robert or Willie or--
Huh? You say it's mine? Oh, dear,
I knew it looked familiar!

1)Can you say that the poem is humorous? If so how?
Yes, the speaker in th poem criticizes the owner of the room for not tidying it up when the room is actually his. irony is being used in the poem. All the different descriptions of the room make it more interesting and amusing.

2)What aspect of the human character has been highlighted in this poem?
From the poem, we can see that humans tend to blame others before blaming themselves.

Cloony The Clown by Shel Silverstein

I'll tell you the story of Cloony the Clown
Who worked in a circus that came through town.
His shoes were too big and his hat was too small,
But he just wasn't, just wasn't funny at all.
He had a trombone to play loud silly tunes,
He had a green dog and a thousand balloons.
He was floppy and sloppy and skinny and tall,
But he just wasn't, just wasn't funny at all.
And every time he did a trick,
Everyone felt a little sick.
And every time he told a joke,
Folks sighed as if their hearts were broke.
And every time he lost a shoe,
Everyone looked awfully blue.
And every time he stood on his head,
Everyone screamed, "Go back to bed!"
And every time he made a leap,
Everybody fell asleep.
And every time he ate his tie,
Everyone began to cry.
And Cloony could not make any money
Simply because he was not funny.
One day he said, "I'll tell this town
How it feels to be an unfunny clown."
And he told them all why he looked so sad,
And he told them all why he felt so bad.
He told of Pain and Rain and Cold,
He told of Darkness in his soul,
And after he finished his tale of woe,
Did everyone cry? Oh no, no, no,They laughed until they shook the trees
With "Hah-Hah-Hahs" and "Hee-Hee-Hees."
They laughed with howls and yowls and shrieks,
They laughed all day, they laughed all week,
They laughed until they had a fit,
They laughed until their jackets split.
The laughter spread for miles around
To every city, every town,
Over mountains, 'cross the sea,
From Saint Tropez to Mun San Nee.
And soon the whole world rang with laughter,
Lasting till forever after,
While Cloony stood in the circus tent,
With his head drooped low and his shoulders bent.
And he said,"THAT IS NOT WHAT I MEANT -
I'M FUNNY JUST BY ACCIDENT."
And while the world laughed outside.
Cloony the Clown sat down and cried.

1)Expain the irony in this poem.
When Cloony did tricks and other things to make people laugh, no one was amused and no one laughed. However, when Cloony apoke of his woes, everyone began laughing while he cried.

2)Does Shel Silverstein manage to convey some harsh realities in this poem?
Shel Silverstein managed to show how unsympathetic people are and not caring for the feelings if others.

3)What poetic devices has the poet used to effectively convey his message?
He used onomatopoeia, similes and various types of descriptions to show the feelings clearer. Irony was also used.

Big Fish

1) What does " a big fish in small pond" mean to you?
People who are important but only within their limited circle of influence.

2) What is the purpose of Edward Bloom's tall tale about  the big fish and the wedding ring?

3)How does William Bloom as a boy feel about the relationship between Edward and William Bloom?
William was very fascinated with the tale when he listened to it the first one or two times. However, Edward kept repeating the story at william's events such as campfires and wedding.William thus befan to feel that the story was unbelievable and lame.

4)Why does Edward Bloom feel the need to keep repeating the tale throughout his life?
Edward felt that his story was very interesting and could always entertain people at events.

5)What does the tale reveal about the relationship between Edwward and William Bloom?
At first, William enjoyed to listen to his father's stories. However, as William grew up and his father continued to repeat the "big fish" story, their relationship suffered. William felt ashamed of his father when he repeated the story at William's wedding and did not talk to him for three years.

6)Consider the following quote: "In telling the story of my father's life, it's impossible to separate fact from fiction, the man from the myth. The best I can do is to tell it the way he told me. It doesn't always make sense, and most of it never happened, but that's what kind of story this is." What kind of storieshave you been told that match this description? What is the effect of telling a story in this way?
Myths, legends or fairytales match this description. By telling a story this way, it becomes much ore interesting for the audience.

7)Does bending the truth or exaggerating the truth for the purpose of conveying an entertaining story undercut the believability of such a story? is a tall tale less valid than a straight reportage of the facts? Why or why not?
Yes, as the story moves further away from reality and truth, the believvability of the story is being comprimised. it is definitely less valid than a straight reportage of the facts but much more exciting in interesting.
