f)How does the Civil War relate to TKAM?--Jun Liang
The civil war was fought due to Americans having different opinions on slavery. Some thought white people were superior and deserved having other races serve them. This is also evident in TKAM, as the white people were prejudiced against black people. Black people were not allowed to sit with the whites, and there was the widespread opinion that black people were always up to no good. To quote the book “any black person cannot be trusted around our women”. This quote shows the prejudice the whites have towards the black. The prejudice is further accented when Atticus asks the question “Have none of you looked at a woman with desire?”. This shows the white people were prejudiced, as they themselves had done what they thought all black people would do.

Reflection of 150-250 words relating your discoveries about the group topic to the events in the film Mississippi Burning

The theme of prejudice is prevalent in both cases. The Civil War was waged before the scene in Mississippi Burning. After the North won the war, the whites in the south feared that their superiority over the blacks would be gone. The whites in the North were against the prejudice of the blacks and thus went to war with the South. The whites in the South felt that blacks were not to be treated with respect and were slaves to the whites. After the war, the prejudice against the blacks in the South prevailed. The whites in the South were angered at their loss and people like the Ku Klux Klan started their rampage against the blacks, leading to mass killings. Commoners in the South did not pity the blacks and due to the corrupted authorities, no one was arrested until the North stepped in again. Thus, we can see that the Civil War did not have any immediate effect in saving the blacks, but caused even more chaos. Movies like Mississippi Burning were directed to commemorate their death and shame the Southern people who were prejudice. In conclusion, we all see the extent of the damage that racial prejudice can cause and how many years it took for the [prejudice to slowly fade away. In fact, there are still remnants of people in America who are still prejudiced.
