f)How does the Civil War relate to TKAM?--Jun Liang
The civil war was fought due to Americans having different opinions on slavery. Some thought white people were superior and deserved having other races serve them. This is also evident in TKAM, as the white people were prejudiced against black people. Black people were not allowed to sit with the whites, and there was the widespread opinion that black people were always up to no good. To quote the book “any black person cannot be trusted around our women”. This quote shows the prejudice the whites have towards the black. The prejudice is further accented when Atticus asks the question “Have none of you looked at a woman with desire?”. This shows the white people were prejudiced, as they themselves had done what they thought all black people would do.

Reflection of 150-250 words relating your discoveries about the group topic to the events in the film Mississippi Burning

The theme of prejudice is prevalent in both cases. The Civil War was waged before the scene in Mississippi Burning. After the North won the war, the whites in the south feared that their superiority over the blacks would be gone. The whites in the North were against the prejudice of the blacks and thus went to war with the South. The whites in the South felt that blacks were not to be treated with respect and were slaves to the whites. After the war, the prejudice against the blacks in the South prevailed. The whites in the South were angered at their loss and people like the Ku Klux Klan started their rampage against the blacks, leading to mass killings. Commoners in the South did not pity the blacks and due to the corrupted authorities, no one was arrested until the North stepped in again. Thus, we can see that the Civil War did not have any immediate effect in saving the blacks, but caused even more chaos. Movies like Mississippi Burning were directed to commemorate their death and shame the Southern people who were prejudice. In conclusion, we all see the extent of the damage that racial prejudice can cause and how many years it took for the [prejudice to slowly fade away. In fact, there are still remnants of people in America who are still prejudiced.

The Straits Times

Dear Sir,
I feel that Singapore has many things to learn from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. The disaster showed the damage that a nuclear plant meltdown could do to a country. It serves as a warning to Singapore that we will not survive a similar accident given our small size. We also have to have a civil defense force at standby, ready to come into action should such a tragic disaster occur. Moreover, our infrastructure of our buildings have to be strong enough to withstand these disasters

Racism in Singapore

I believe that the government has seen that racism could cause serious damage to a country. Religion, race and gender are just some of the common forms of prejudice and racism. The government has taken many precautionary measures and opportunities for races to intermingle and learn to get along with each other.

However, I still feel that more could be done in Singapore in order to prevent racism. For example, the government should have even stricter measures and punishment imposed on those who openly express their dislike and hatred for another race of religion and that person should also go for some course to change his way of thinking about racism.

CIP experience

I felt that this CIP experience was very unique and enriching. It was the first time I ever went to an old folk's home to help out. When I first arrived, I was mostly at a lost. However, when I interacted with the old folks, I found that it was very interesting to talk to them. Most of them were very willing to talk to us and I could see that they really enjoyed the performance. I was really happy to have this opportunity to visit the old folks and I hope to be able to help out again. The main thing I gained from this experience is the joy of helping others as well as bringing joy to them.

LA-ACE----English project

This year, I decided to do an English project for Project’s Day. I failed my Project's Day last year and I did badly for Independent Studies, which in turn pulled down my scholastic MSG. That served as a wakeup call for me, given the fact that I reflected upon what went wrong and I realise that having good team mates and working together was one of the main factors that affect your success. Working together also means trying your best to put aside personal commitments to attend group meetings and contributing. Each group member should have an equal commitment so that it is fair for everyone. This year, I learnt from my past mistakes and decided to choose my teammates carefully. I also chose to do a project which I was comfortable with. Last year, I did a project on a math topic which I had not learnt before and had to do tons of research. This time, I decided to choose to do an English project on Singlish, something that we speak every day. I also learnt another lessons from last year. We should work closely with our project mentors as they know what is expected of us in order to do well in our projects. I will do my best in this year’s Project’s Day and try to achieve a good grade and get a good scholastic MSG!

What I learnt in Mississippi Burning

Racism hurts. I got a chance to see how Mississipi a victim of racism and innocent black people are being treated and killed. The story is similar to "To Kill a Mockingbird". The theme of the slaughter of innocent mockingbirds are being displayed. Mockingbirds do not harm humans but they are being slaughtered. Similarly, black people are being slaughtered even they do not harm anyone.
